Let's Chat!

What’s up, Metaverse?  Caitlyn Meeks here with the High Fidelity Content Team.

Today’s blog explains how you can set up and use text chat in High Fidelity.

The great thing about an extensible open-source platform is you can create the features you want.  If we seem to be dragging our feet or haven’t met your expectations, we want you to have the freedom and capability to make it work, your way. And long term, we want to further empower you to turn your hard work into revenue with our coming marketplace.

There’s a number of different approaches to implementing text chat in HiFi. Let’s have a look at a couple great chat scripts out there.

Run ctrlaltdavid's HiFi Local Chat script to participate in domain based chats.

HiFi Local Chat by ctrlaltdavid

The awesome and amazing alpha user known as ctrlaltdavid has created and contributed much to the High Fidelity platform.  As example of this is his HiFi Local Chat script, which  is clean, reliable and well written.  Just run the script from High Fidelity by using the following URL in Edit > Open and Run Script from URL:

http://ctrlaltstudio.com/downloads/hifi/scripts/chat.js

David’s script will start running and you’ll see a text chat window pop up enabling you to chat with other folks in the same domain who are running the script. If text chat’s important to you, you might want to add this to your default scripts so it’s always there.

COM Script Version 1 by AlphaVersionD

The amazing AlphaVersionD has authored an equally powerful and friendly script, except it runs on a domain and is therefore immediately accessible to everyone who visits. They needn’t install or run anything! This means, as a domain operator, you can give your visitors access to text chat by default!

To install COM Script on your domain, follow these steps:

  1. Make a Zone Entity
  2. Paste this URL in the "scripts" section of said Zone Entity:
    http://metaversecafes.com/HighFidelity/QueenCity/A_2016_Q_wab/AQUI/COM_v1.0.js
  3. Close the Edit panel.
  4. Throw a party!

There’s plenty of alternative approaches, but these two are popular and I don’t hesitate to recommend them.  You’ll also find other clever solutions to text chat in the High Fidelity community forum, some are similar to the above approaches and others taking advantage of the power of IRC.

WhatsApp for web runs great in High Fidelity's built-in browser and works in HMD too!

By the way, you can also launch a local web browser inside High Fidelity by pressing Ctrl-B and then run WhatsApp WebSlack, and other popular browser-based chat applications.  It works great, even in your HMD.  While it might not be ideal for random chat encounters, it can be quite handy when larger groups (like colleagues and classmates) need a way to keep in touch without breaking immersion.

Chat with you later!
